'Lieber Gott! Warum! Ich habe eine Studie über die Idyllen des Calpurnius Siculus und seine Hapax legomena geschrieben. Eine Arbeit über ein paar argrarische Fachausdrücke, die dieser Calpurnius Siculus verwendet, deren Bedeutung strittig ist und die in der übrigen römischen Literatur nicht vorkommen. Dazu hab' ich gewisse Quellenwerke gebraucht. Ich bekam einiges aus der Universitätsbibliothek. Aber drei alte, wertvolle Drucke wollte mir der Kustos nicht nach Hause geben. Ich brauchte sie aber, und so trug ich sie einfach unter dem Mantel fort.'
